MillerKnoll’s Summer Internship Program is a paid, 12-week opportunity that provides a 100% real-world experience for students early in their careers. Throughout the summer you will apply academic learning to real-world situations and cultivate leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Design Within Reach is looking for an industrial or furniture designer to join our team to assist with the design of products across furniture, lighting, and textiles.
This role will be focused on developing new design concepts, bringing expertise in ideation through sketching, developing CAD drawings, hands-on prototyping, and documentation of technical details. This role attends meetings and maintains close collaboration with cross-functional teams, external partners, and manufacturers, ensuring maintenance of the company’s ethos through effective communication, proactive research, creative thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills. This role is based in Stamford, CT with 4 days in-office (with flexibility for one day per week in New York City).
Responsibilities
Research: Find innovative and sustainable new materials, finishes and mechanisms, consulting with partners across the MillerKnoll enterprise.
Design: Concept development, visual communication, and creation of 3D and 2D files, with exceptional skills in digital rendering and hand sketching.
Collaboration: Work closely with internal design, merchandising, and product development teams to bring new and innovative design concepts to market. This role will facilitate communication cross-functionally, and proactively contribute to creative thinking and technical knowledge.
Mechanical Aptitude: Maintain technical specifications and requirements, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with industry standards. Produce technical drawings ensuring compliance with manufacturing standards and design guidelines. Attention to detail and accuracy ensuring up-to-date information and accessibility of drawings.
Growth Mindset: Identify opportunities to enhance company processes, improve accuracy, and streamline workflows to deliver to the studio’s highest design standards.
Industry Savvy: Stay updated on new products entering the market and research archival designs to ensure authenticity within our product line. Research innovative and sustainable new materials, finishes, manufacturing techniques, and mechanisms, consulting with partners across the MillerKnoll enterprise. Have awareness of industry standards in architecture, design, furniture, and consumer products, across macro and emerging trends to drive innovation and enhance design capabilities.
Qualifications/ Skills
- Excellent 3D modeling (Fusion 360 or Blender preferred), and Adobe Creative Suite skills.
- Excellent visual communication skills across 2D and 3D platforms, both digital and physical.
- Excellent creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Understanding of design principles, aesthetics, cultural trends, and design history.
- Positive and professional attitude, with a willingness to learn.
- Understanding of manufacturing and craft techniques (with preferred hands-on experience with sewing, wood working, metal working, ceramics, or other)
Education/ Experience
- Attending school for a degree in Industrial Design or related field required.
- Experience working in cross-functional team environments.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information to make recommendations
- Demonstrated growth potential and market research experience preferred.
- You must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (overall or within your program) to qualify for consideration in the Intern Program.
- Must have satisfactorily completed basic coursework in the chosen degree program.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.

A starting compensation range for this role is $22.25 - $26.45. Relevant salary considerations will include candidate qualifications and experience, other business/organizational needs and market factors .
